SHELBYVILLE, TN – The Shelbyville Central Golden Eaglettes shot 11/28 from the FT line in Monday’s 49-46 (OT) home loss to the Summit Lady Spartans inside Rick Insell Gymnasium.

The Eaglettes went 2/8 at the charity stripe in the fourth quarter, including 0/4 in the final 33 seconds with a 44-43 lead to allow Summit the opportunity to force overtime. Summit’s Bridget Allee, who finished with 12 points on the night, was fouled by Kenley Patton with 13.9 seconds left. Allee calmly knocked down the first free throw, but she missed the second, and after Shelbyville was unable to get a good shot off, the game went into overtime tied at 44.

To start the extra session, Allee converted a three-point-play to get things started. Neither team scored for the next three minutes until Jaz Western, who was saddled with foul trouble all throughout the first half, connected on a layup to cut into the lead. However, the Eaglettes were unable to connect on a three-pointer in their final possession, allowing Summit to escape with the win.

Lanaya Young, who battled cramps during the end of the fourth quarter and the entire overtime period, scored a game-high 19 points, including 12 in the second half. Western and Janiya Leslie each scored seven points apiece as well.

For the Lady Spartans, Trinity Garcia led the way with a team-high 15 points, including a crucial buzzer-beating stepback three-pointer right before halftime, and Allee chipped in with 12 points. Tarek Scherr scored nine points of her own, and Mariya Ramzy added eight points, including a handful of crucial steals late in the game.

Shelbyville held a 10-6 lead at the end of the first quarter with five different Eaglettes scoring at least one point. However, in the second quarter, Summit found their groove offensively, outscoring the hosts, 18-8, punctuated by Garcia’s buzzer-beater to go to the halftime locker room with a 24-18 lead.

Coming out of the locker room, Lanaya Young started to put her head down and began to drive to the basket, earning six free throws in the period. She only was able to convert three of them, but the Eaglettes still outscored the Lady Spartans 11-9 in the period to cut into the lead, 33-29, heading into the final frame.

In the fourth quarter, Shelbyville forced six consecutive turnovers to start things off thanks to the quick hands of Jaz Western, leading to run-outs and easy layups for the Eaglettes to re-take the lead. As the game slowed down, Shelbyville was able to score just enough to maintain their lead, until the final 33 seconds of the game that saw the hosts go 0/4 at the charity stripe to allow Summit an opportunity to send the game into overtime and eventually win it.

Summit improves to 4-1 on the season.

Shelbyville falls to 2-3 overall, and their next game is Tuesday night at Tullahoma.
