BELL BUCKLE, TN – The Cascade Lady Champions hung tough for three quarters at home against the Moore County Raiderettes, but the visitors pulled away in the fourth quarter to win, 63-40, on Tuesday.
Ellie Graham and Ally Sharpe combined for 42 points – 24 for Graham and 18 for Sharpe – for the Class 1A State Tournament favorites, and their interior defense was just as effective against the Lady Champs’ offensive attack.
Kaegan Young, Sophie Ray, and Kaydence Miller combined to shoot 4/17 from inside the arc against the length and physical defense of the Raiderettes, who returned every starter from last year’s Class 1A State Runners-Up squad that fell to Pickett County, 56-45, in the title game.
Young led the Lady Champs with 11 points. Sophie Ray scored eight points of her own, and Lizzie Keele chipped in with seven points as well. In the end, however, Cascade had no answer for the inside-out game of Graham, who shot 10/12 from the field and 4/6 from the free throw line, and Sharpe, who connected on a trio of three-pointers.
Moore County ended the opening period with a 15-8 lead after starting the game up 8-0 as their physical defense, a staple of Chad Spencer coached teams, set the tone from the opening jump.
The Raiderettes extended their lead thanks to a strong second quarter, outscoring Cascade 14-9 in the period to take a 29-17 lead going into the halftime locker room.
The Lady Champs seemed to settle down in the third quarter, actually outscoring Moore County, 17-15, to stay within reach heading into the final frame down by just 10 points, 44-34.
However, Cascade was unable to maintain the same level of offensive output as the Raiderettes took over in the fourth quarter, holding the Lady Champs to just six points as they slowly pulled away to win the first matchup of the season between the two teams, 63-40.
Moore County improves to 3-0.
Cascade falls to 2-2 and is scheduled to travel to Fayetteville on Friday night, LIVE on The Zinger 100.9 and AM 1400 starting at 5:45 p.m.
